Verdant Productions Premieres The Blackwater Lightship

Dublin Theatre Festival is delighted to present the world premiere of Verdant Productions’ The Blackwater Lightship, Colm Tóibín’s piercing novel about a broken family, making a family of your own and the cost of caring for each other.

This much anticipated production will run for 7 days only at the Gaiety Theatre, previewing September 27th & 28th and opening September 29th. Adapted and directed by David Horan, the production features Ruth McCabe as Dora, Karen Ardiff as Lily, Rachel O’Byrne as Helen, David Rawle as Declan, Donncha O’Dea as Larry, Will O’Connell as Paul and Billie Traynor as Essie.

The sterling creative team includes Set and Costume Design by Maree Kearns, Lighting Design by Kevin Smith with Music and Sound Design by Tom Lane. “When I was young, lying in bed, I used to believe that Tuskar was a man and the Blackwater Lightship was a woman and they were both sending signals to each other and to other lighthouses, like mating calls.”

It’s 90s Ireland and HIV/AIDS is still a terminal diagnosis. A sister, a mother and a grandmother, along with two gay friends, have come together to tend to 29-year-old Declan, who has the disease. Can this makeshift family unit face up to the illness and each other?
