The Digital Hub opens call for new Technologist in Residence

  • Residency to focus on community health and wellbeing and environmental sustainability on The Digital Hub campus.
  • Applications close at 5pm on Friday, April 15th with funding of €15,000 available to successful applicant

The Digital Hub is looking for its next technologist in residence, with an opportunity for a three-to-six-month residency commencing in May 2022. The residency will be based at The Digital Hub campus and will focus on a collaborative, community-centred approach, with a long-lasting impact on the Dublin 8 community.

The residency will include an emphasis on interacting with the local community, with the technologist working with local residents of all ages and community groups to gather, analyse and publish data related to health and wellbeing in Dublin 8. A key task will be to also gather data on the environmental sustainability activities on The Digital Hub campus. The campus is home to Ireland’s first native tree nursery in an urban location and a number of beehives to promote biodiversity in the area

Unlike traditional technologist in residence programs which operate independently, The Digital Hub are aiming to blend the successful applicant’s work with future artist in residence programs. The intersection of technology and art has been a longstanding priority for The Digital Hub, located in Dublin’s Liberties. It is hoped that the data and results gathered throughout the technologist in residence’s tenure will be creatively visualised in The Digital Hub’s next artist in residence program.

Stephen Brennan, Head of Strategy and Partnerships at the Digital Hub said:

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to welcome back another technologist in residence at The Digital Hub. We strive to create and explore ways of interconnecting arts and technology at The Digital Hub. Through both our technologist in residence and our artist in residence programmes, we are finding ways to do that for the benefit of our local community.”

A key focus will be on leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology by using and introducing new sensor technologies to the campus to collect and analyse data on population health and wellbeing and sustainability.

Benefits of the programme include access to The Digital Hub facilities, an office/studio space on campus, networking opportunities through the current network of Digital Hub member companies and access to a cutting-edge community field of innovation. Total funding available for the successful technologist in residence will be in the region of €15,000.

The Digital Hub welcomed its first technologist in residence in 2019, Rodhán Hickey, who took up a residency on campus for a nine-month period. During his time as the technologist in resident, Rodhán focused on increasing the ties and collaborative spirit between client companies at The Digital Hub and the wider Dublin 8 community.

The Digital Hub is also a lead partner in Smart D8, a smart city initiative focused on improving the health and wellbeing of the Dublin 8 community through collaboration and innovative technology applications. There will be opportunity for the next technologist in residence to benefit from ongoing projects operated by the Smart D8 team.

Interested applicants should have direct experience in sensor hardware, software development, data capture/hosting/visualisation and analytics.  Applications for the residency process should be submitted by Friday April 15th at 5pm.

More information about the residency programme and application process can be found here.
